I just wanted to comment that I found out about you because Amazon offered a free Kindle edition of The Surgeon. I liked it so much I bought Kindle versions of all the other books in the series.

I think giving away one free book is a good strategy. Based on the discussions on the Kindle forums, a lot of people downloaded it. I'm sure I wasn't the only on who got hooked on the series.

As an electronic book convert--I only intend to buy and read books in a format I can read on my Kindle.

Yes, unscrupulous people put out unauthorized copies. There's probably not any way to stop that, but I believe most people are honest and are willing to pay for their electronic books.

It's hard to believe that the authors are unaware of the fact that their books are being disseminated on the web. This seems to be an unavoidable reality. On the other hand, this same phenomenon may help to create more readers for the authors and possibly increase the sale of the print version of their books.

JMH,
I didn't realize so many other books were available there -- and unauthorized! My publisher put THE SURGEON up on SCRBD for a month, believing that it's a way to build readership.

Tess, just for grins I clicked on your link, primarily to see where your PDF was stored since I've been thinking of making one of my books free as well.

Your PDF is stored at SCRBD.

Did you know that many of your other books are available there? For example, Bone Garden was apparently uploaded there by someone named "flowerbudd" one month ago. It is a sloppy word document that does indeed appear to track your actual book when you click the link.

Intrigued, I searched some other name brand authors, such as J.K. Rowling. Low and behold, lots of her books had been uploaded on Scribd by persons with mysterious names. When you click on the links, the books do in fact pop up --- FOR FREE!

I wonder how many authors know that this is happening.

Tess,

...and I thought the world started with Adam and Eve. Nope. The world started when this talented writer created Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles.
Tess, to you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. May 2009 bring you peace, love, and much happiness.
